Dr. Hattaway may recommend sedation dentistry for patients who feel anxious, fearful or distressed when visiting Indian Creek Dental. Sedation dentistry enables you to minimize your anxiety and discomfort so that you can receive the treatments you need in comfort. Our skilled dentist offers several types of sedation to help you relax during your appointment. We encourage you to speak with us prior to your appointment so that we can determine which type of sedation will be most beneficial for you and develop a plan to help you manage your dental anxiety and fear.

Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)

Inhaled through a nasal mask during treatment, nitrous oxide sedation allows patients to experience reduced sensitivity and achieve a state of relaxation that earned it the nickname “laughing gas”. We can quickly and easily adjust the dose of nitrous oxide to keep you completely comfortable during your appointment. The sedative effects of nitrous oxide wear away quickly (as little as 5 minutes), allowing patients to resume their daily schedule right away. You can even drive yourself to and from the office.

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you experience severe dental phobia or anxiety, you may benefit from the use of oral conscious sedation. The reason this method of sedation is commonly used for anxious patients is that you start to relax before you ever leave home. Simply take a prescribed oral medication at the predetermined time. Then, by the time of your treatment, you’ll already feel relaxed and ready for any treatment needed to be completed. The effects of oral conscious sedation are long lasting, so you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you to and from the office.

IV Sedation

Dr. Hattaway is one of the few dentists in the area who provides this advanced form of sedation in his office. He works with a trusted sedation specialist who can offer the safest and most effective possible sedation. IV sedation combines the deep sedative effects of oral conscious sedation with the instant dosage adjustment possible with nitrous oxide sedatives. Because of the high level of sedation achieved, you’ll need to have a friend or family member drive you home from your appointment.
