In the earliest stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, more frequent in-office teeth cleanings and better at-home hygiene may be adequate to completely renew your oral health. However, if Dr. Hattaway and our team are unable to halt the progression of gum disease in the less severe stage, you may develop the advanced form of gum disease known as periodontitis. At this stage, periodontal disease begins to break down the soft tissues and supportive alveolar bone tissues that anchor your teeth to the jawbone.
To renew your health at this stage, we’ll need to begin with an advanced deep cleaning treatment known as scaling and root planing. Scaling is the systematic removal of plaque and tartar buildup. Root planing is the smoothing of tooth roots below the gum line to prevent future buildup. Your scaling and root planing treatment may be divided into several appointments, with our dentist treating one section of your mouth during each visit to our office. We may also combine scaling and root planing with other periodontal treatments, such as antibiotic therapy, in order to produce the best results.
Following this initial deep cleaning, you’ll need to visit our office three or four times each year for professional maintenance teeth cleanings to prevent any future periodontal disease.
